S.T.A.R. of the Month for October 2012: DEVAN RODE
Every month we choose a S.T.A.R. of the month. Someone who is STYLISH, TALENTED, ARTISTIC, AND REMARKABLE. For the month of October we chose Devan! We sat down with Devan and asked her a few questions. Here is what she had to say:
Name: Devan "Freedom" Rode
Job Title: Hair Designer/Nail Technician
Birthday: January 7, 1985
Tell us about your family: I have my immediate, blood-related family, which consits of my dad Jim, my mom Mihwa, as well as my two older sisters, Kristina and Shauna. Last but not least, my nieces, Darian and Lucy. My mom and dad have been a huge blessing in my life; from raising me right to giving me a leg-up in starting my career as a stylist. I'm very grateful to have such loving parents, who support me even when it might look as if their daughter is crazy! My sisters have always been inspirations to me and continue to be. I'm increasingly grateful for them as I get older and need advice or just someone to talk to. My nieces are crazy intelligent and full of life. I'm proud of the new gen of the "Rode Legacy". They are sure to be world changers! And now my OTHER family: My Crew: Until We dIE! I'm a B-Girl (or as some might say, I "break dance"). I came back to Cali after living in Texas for some time. I learned to break out there, but never had a crew. After moving back, I made some friends who would later turn out to be much more! I gained 11 brothers and 1 sister. Their names are: Loony, Rush, Foolio, Prototype, Heart, JB-DNE, Drake, JE-Flava (aka Starskreem), AZZ1, Monkey, EZKELETO, and Jazmin. We are the motliest crew ever. Everyone has their own style and I've learned from all of them. We spend a lot of time together and I'm so grateful for them. I would not be where I am as a dancer or as a person without them.
How long have you been at Seasons? How long since you started your career?: I've been at Seasons since November, 2011. Licensed since 2008.
When did you know this was what you wanted to do?: High School. I had long hair until 8th grade, when I got into music. I wanted a bob! My stylist was super cool and educated me about her method of razor cutting. I bought my own razor comb at Sally's and began cutting my own hair when my mom couldn't take me to get it done. In 9th grade, I stayed at my friends house for 2 weeks and came back with blonde hair. After that, years of experimenting on my hair and friends hair followed, and by my senior year I was pretty certain of my life after high school.
What Inspires You?: I draw inspiration from the people and things I love: My Creator, Creation, My Family, My Dance, Friends, Music. I like to observe and learn from everyone and everything I can. There's treasure to be found everywhere if one is willing to look!
What is your favorite thing about what you do?: I like changing lives with the small, but very important details. Hair is important as it represents a part of you, whether we acknowledge this as fact or not. When people entrust me with this part of their being, I'm grateful and when I can make them feel good about themselves, that is what I love most. Also, opening people's minds to new perspectives on style and perhaps life, also. I aim to be a life-enhancer.
Fave Trends? Least Fave?: Men: Faves are Classic Cuts, Namely the undercut. Go, Michael Pitt! Classics are classic for a reason. Guys, Please take note of the tried and true! Least Faves: The "blowout"/"Pauly D". No! Just, No. Women: Faves are Loose, flowing curls/waves; the easy-going undone, but soft and romantic look that has been made so easy by curl wands! Praise Jesus for curl wands! Least Fave: One side shaved, mainly because so many people do it who can't match their personality/lifestyle/visual presentation of themselves with the bold cut. Ain't no shame in being a blunt bob personality! Unless you really have a green mohawk heart, please dont go getting one. Be real.
Favorite Aveda Products?: Men's Grooming Clay, Damage Remedy Daily Hair Repair, Phomollient, Pure Abundance Style Prep, Flax Seed Aloe Gel, Smooth Infusion Style Prep.
Why do you love Aveda? Seasons?: I love Aveda because of their integrity. I know where the products come from and where my money and my guests' money is going. I love that they give back to communities world-wide and the Earth itself. Seasons- I love it because it feels like home. I was scared to leave my salon family in Texas, but from my first interview, I felt welcomed. I have a family here in CA now, and I couldn't be happier!
Have any professional goals or dreams for yourself?: I would love to do work for fashion shows, photoshoots, movies, and special events. I love the excitement and challenge of on-site work. I'd also like to study different techniques in other countries, and possibly educate from my experiences one day.
Where do you see the industry in 5 years? Where do you see yourself?: I see the industry moving toward more efficient methods and products. Becoming more concise and cutting out unnecessary and possibly harmful (to hair or health) products/ingredients and techniques/processes. Something good about living in an age of convenience--we are forced to streamline as much as possible. Which, in many cases, can be a good thing. Myself? I see a stable clientele base, more education and experience, and therefore more confidence to approach my dream arena of becoming a sought-after stylist for fashion shows and special events.
My Motto: "Look for the gold in every person and situation and you will always be rich."
